What are the minimum liability requirements for car insurance in Texas?

$30,000 for each injured person up to a total of $60,000 per accident and $25,000 for property damage per accident.  Sometimes you will hear agents refer to these limits as 30/60/25.

What does it mean to be at fault in an accident in Texas?

The "at fault" party of an accident is the person who is responsible or partly responsible for causing the accident.  The "at fault" party is responsible for paying for the damages other people incur such as property damage, medical bills, pain and suffering, rental car, lost wages etc.

Can someone else drive my car in Texas?

Allowing someone else to drive your car for reasons other than medical emergencies or you being incapacitated, should be considered thoroughly.  Insurance follows the car, so when you allow someone to drive your car, you are allowing them to use your insurance.  If the other person driving your car has their own personal auto policy, that policy would be secondary insurance for them while your insurance would be the primary insurance used to pay damages. So, if they have a at fault accident while driving your car, it will affect your rates and premiums for a long time.

When do we add a new teen driver to our policy in Texas?

You should add your new teen driver to your policy when they turn 16.  Make sure you tell your agent which automobile the teen will be primarily driving.

What Liability limits should I carry on my car insurance in Texas?

As much as you can afford!  Seriously, you will never be able to predict the kind of accident you will have; how many autos will be damaged, how many people injured.  Buy as much liability insurance as you can afford.  We also recommend you purchase an Excess/Umbrella policy to provide higher limits of liability than what is afforded on a personal auto policy.  Have your agent get you multiple quotes showing you the cost of various limits of liability and Excess/Umbrella coverage.

What kinds of credits and discounts can I get on auto insurance in Texas?

Discounts vary between insurance companies.  Here are just a few discounts you should ask your agent about:

  • Defensive Driving
  • Good Student
  • Having your Home or tenant policy with same insurance company
  • Multiple car

Always ask you agent to tell you about any discounts that could be apply
